Over three decades ago, David Matz, Brad Honoroff, and Jane Honoroff set out to create a firm that would bring together top attorneys, retired judges, mental health professionals, researchers, and experts in organizational development.

The Mediation Group’s unique goal was to bring a unique approach to conflict resolution by leveraging the cross-disciplinary talent of our practitioners to assist individuals, couples, families, and organizations in legal challenges, conflict resolution, mediation, and focused training.

Having set the standard for mediation, we were hired to design and implement a court-approved mediation program in Massachusetts, the first-ever program of its kind used in the Massachusetts Superior Court.

The Mediation Group’s Purpose

Combining knowledge of the law with expertise in mental health and organizational development, we help individuals, families, and organizations to resolve current and future conflicts in constructive ways — saving them resources, time, and stress.

To do this, our team of attorneys, retired judges, mental health professionals, researchers, and experts in organizational development combine methods across disciplines. We provide services including mediation, arbitration, training, facilitation, and coaching. The Mediation Group finds a way for clients to creatively resolve conflicts — and move on with their lives.

When The Mediation Group incorporated in 1985, it did so as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. This decision reflects our leadership’s longstanding commitment to public service. Since our founding, we have been committed to:

  • Bringing dispute resolution processes and techniques — mediation, arbitration, facilitation, collaborative problem solving, training, and consulting — to a wide range of fields

  • Improving the practice of ADR and the skills of practitioners

  • Designing quality dispute resolution systems for courts, administrative agencies, and private organizations

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

We’re proud to serve clients with integrity and strong ethical values. The Mediation Group is a non-profit firm committed to fostering greater diversity, equity, and inclusion both within the organization and in the field of conflict resolution.

Values Statement on Racial and Social Equity and Justice

As an organization that practices conflict resolution professionally, we value the principles of collaboration, respect, and integrity. Implied by that are commitments to treat everyone in our professional lives — service providers, clients, vendors — equally and thoughtfully.

We recognize that this commitment requires making explicit an additional set of values. These include:

  • Enhancing sensitivity to ways in which we can be more welcoming to people of color and others from marginalized communities;

  • Supporting the learning and self-assessment of their staff and associates on issues related to race, racism, white supremacy, and other individual, institutionalized and systemic biases;

  • Reaching out to communities of color and other marginalized communities to increase their capacity for inclusion;

  • Increasing the diversity of people who work in and with The Mediation Group;

  • Seeking ways in which we can move the field toward greater racial and social equity and justice;

  • Supporting others who are involved in the work of moving their broader society toward greater racial and social equity and justice.

Fellowship Program

Since The Mediation Group’s inception, our leadership has made it a priority to invest in the development of the next generation of mediators. This has been accomplished through the development of our Fellowship Program, which provides a venue for individuals desiring to enter the ADR field and an opportunity to receive training, mentorship, coaching, and experience. Several graduates of our Fellowship Program currently serve as mediators.
